A group of cyclists has completed a Climate Ride in the United States to raise money for projects and organisations that work to promote climate action.

The bike tour covered 292-mile over five-days in Northern California in support of clean energy projects, clean transport development, sustainable infrastructure and public health.

The ride is one of 10 biking and hiking events planned this year by Climate Ride, a non-profit organisation that uses sports to “inspire and empower citizens to work toward a new energy future.”

The ride started on Sunday 22 May in Fortuna in Humboldt County with the finish line at the Golden Gate Bridge (pictured) in San Francisco.

The ride was organised by twelve local residents of Santa Cruz who have formed a Climate Ride team called Bike Santa Cruz County.

The team collectively raised $44,710, exceeding its goal of $35,000 with each cyclist having a $2,800 target.

Some of the funding will support Bike Santa Cruz County which promotes cycling through advocacy, education and community programmes.

The ride also included guest speakers at campsites along the route who addressed topics including bicycle advocacy, glacial melting and sustainable farming.

Amelia Conlen, director of Bike Santa Cruz County and the team captain for the Santa Cruz group, said: “One of the coolest things about the ride is it is environmentally focused and draws people from interesting fields from throughout the country… I met and rode with professors, solar advocates, ocean researchers and farmers.”
