Sales of electric vehicles in China increased by 223 per cent last year and made up a 1.4 per cent share of China’s total auto market in December.

A total of 188,700 NEVs were sold in China over the year, an increase of about 223 per cent compared to 2014.

Around 124,000 electric buses and commercial vehicles were also deployed across China in 2015.

China has now become the largest EV market in the world, being roughly 50 per cent bigger than the US market last year.

Substantial incentives offered to EV buyers in China have had a significant impact on the growth seen in the market last year.

The country’s overall auto market reached its peak in December 2015, with 2,442,000 cars sold during the month.

2015 finished as the best sales year ever, with 21,109,000 passenger cars sold.
