Lord Brown hosts first international scientific and business congress on climate change

Lord Brown of Madingley Hosts First International Scientific and Business Congress on "Protecting the Climate – A World Joint Strategy"

The First session of the International Scientific and Business Congress will be held from the 22nd to the 24th April 2008. The congress will be a start for creating a fusion between Business, Government and Science.

Uniquely, it will try and find the combined contribution science, technology, government and business can provide by working together on climate change issues. Focus will be on creating a framework for dealing with climate change as well as issues such as energy and conservation, financing clean technologies, carbon sinks and credits, and concepts for global partnership and cooperation.

Members of the congress are from the US, UK, and German Governments as well as Business leaders and Scientists from around the world.

The goal will be to develop a world joint strategy with subsequent practical recommendations: to officially recognize environmental business as a priority for the economic sector worldwide, and suggest legislative regulations to attract worldwide investor expectations which will provide support for the further development of Clean Technologies. as well as foundation of new business, technologies and science niches protecting the climate worldwide, and so on.

Key speakers will include Prof Dr Ian S F Jones of the Ocean Technology, University of Sydney, Australia and Mr Jare Adejuwon, The Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM), Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria, Ms Friedlinde Gurr-Hirsch, Secretary of State Baden-Wuerttemberg Ministry for Food and Rural Areas, Germany, and many other prominent figures.

R K Pachauri, Ph.D, Director-General, Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI) said "I am very happy to learn that the First International Scientific and Business Congress on Protecting the Climate – A World Joint Strategy is being held to create a fusion between government, business and science. Indeed, solutions for the future would involve close collaboration between all these three stakeholders as well as the involvement of civil society.

The Fourth Assessment Report of the IPCC has come up with major findings that have created heightened awareness and understanding on various aspects of climate change at a level which is quite unprecedented.

We now need to follow up on this knowledge by taking actions and implementing measures that would lead to a stabilization of the earth's climate in an acceptably short period of time.

Not to do so would lead to impacts of climate change which could have very serious consequences across the globe and particularly for the most vulnerable communities that are already suffering from stresses of various kinds. Climate change and its impacts would only exacerbate these stresses.

I am particularly impressed to see that Lord Browne of Madingley is a Patron of this Congress, because I regard him as a visionary leader of business who has shown that a company can do everything expected by its shareholders and at the same time serve the interests of society at large.

I am sure the Congress would be an extremely useful event for coming up with solutions and initiatives that could help not only defining our response to the challenge of climate change but also motivate and mobilize all stakeholders in getting down to action in this regard."
