Mark Carney has warned that although the G7 has taken some of the necessary steps in the financial sector, there is still 'unfinished business' to reach net zero.
At the Climate Innovation Forum 2021, Mark Carney was joined by HSBC's Group Chief Executive Noel Quinn to discuss how we can accelerate the pace for net zero success.
When asked by Chair Nik Gowing on the committments made at the G7 Summit last month, Mark Carney said: “We have to make it the turning point for our planet. The G7 has put down the gauntlet and secondly taken some of the steps necessary in the financial sector, but there is unfinished business.”
Noel Quinn, who was in Cornwall for the discussions, said: “There was a very positive mood, strong engagement and I was encouraged by the dialogue we had.”
“We, the private sector, together with the government’s of the world, need to find pragmatic solutions to turn the good intent into action.”
Carney and Quinn also deep dived into the important role public-private relationships will play in meeting climate targets and the need for the private sector to take a bigger responsibility to ensure this partnership is a success.
Mark Carney's used his final thoughts to address the audience: “We have a huge amount left to do – but its not too late yet.”
