OVO Energy, the UK’s leading independent energy supplier, has announced it has entered into a Power Purchase Agreement with Ørsted, to buy green power from the Barrow Offshore Wind Farm.
Kyle Worthington, Head of Power Origination at Ørsted, said “We’re delighted to begin this relationship with OVO Energy and help the UK move towards a greener, more climate-friendly energy system. It is great to see major suppliers like OVO committing to increase the amount of electricity they are sourcing from renewable generators and we are very happy to help them on this journey.”
Barrow Offshore Wind Farm, founded by Ørsted in 2001 is one of the UK’s longest-standing wind farms. Located in the East Irish Sea and consisting of 30 wind turbines, it has a 90MW capacity.
This new agreement will see OVO Energy purchasing 100% of the power generated – enough to power around 80,000 homes.
Ben Blake, CEO of OVO Energy, added “We’re proud to work with Ørsted on a major power purchase agreement. In the future, we’re committed to exploring how we can source more energy from renewable generation here in the UK, supporting the industry and helping to drive down costs.”
By the end of the year, OVO Energy aims to increase the amount of renewable electricity support by UK renewable electricity generation to almost 40%. This is part of its mission to create a net zero carbon future, with the company already offering 100% renewable energy to all OVO Energy members as standard, with the option for 100% carbon-neutral energy available too.
