Google has the best corporate social responsibility reputation in the world, according to the Reputation Institute’s annual Global CSR RepTrak 100 ranking.

The California-based technology giant topped the CSR reputation list for the second year in a row with BMW named as the runner-up and Walt Disney Company coming third.

Microsoft and Daimler completed the top five with Lego, Apple, Intel, Rolls-Royce Aerospace and Rolex making up the top ten.

Brad Hecht, Vice President and Chief Research Officer at Reputation Institute, said the companies named on the list are not only succeeding at being good corporate citizens, but are communicating their CSR strategies to consumers effectively.

The Global CSR RepTrak 100 list reflects public perceptions of companies’ performance across three areas including citizenship, the workplace and governance.

The results show which firms have the best reputation with consumers for having a positive societal influence, being environmentally friendly, operating with openness and transparency, behaving ethically, rewarding employees fairly and promoting employee well-being, among other factors.

Hecht said: “Corporate social responsibility is one of the most complex areas of a company’s public identity… The companies in the Global CSR RepTrak 100 are succeeding not only at being good corporate citizens, but in communicating those characteristics to consumers who increasingly rely on a brand’s reputation in making purchasing decisions and recommending products and services to others.”

Google’s first place is recognition for a range of achievements including being carbon neutral since 2007 and the company has implemented numerous sustainability initiatives including Google Green.

Google was also one of the first tech employers to release workplace diversity data and has dedicated its operations to expanding internet access, according to the Reputation Institute.

With a score of 75.4, Google is ranked about 2 points ahead of BMW and according to the Reputation Institute's results, only the top 16 companies in its rankings earned what’s considered a “Strong CSR reputation score.”

The RepTrak model covers 7,000 companies in more than 50 countries and examines 15 stakeholder groups in about 25 industries.
